Maharashtra has a deep and historic connection with India's defence sector, hosting major Army Cantonment towns (Pune, Nashik Road, Ahmednagar, Devlali, Deolali, Kamptee near Nagpur), DRDO research complexes, Ordnance Factories, and the National Defence Academy (NDA) at Khadakwasla near Pune.

MES (Military Engineering Services) civilian posts are among the most stable central government jobs available to Maharashtra candidates. MES civilian employees maintain military buildings, roads, airfields, and technical infrastructure across Army, Navy, and Air Force establishments. Maharashtra, with multiple cantonment areas, has significant MES strength. Posts range from MTS and Mazdoor to Chargeman, Draftsman, and Engineer-level positions.
